Summary and Overview:

Brian Corr is a senior nonprofit professional with 20 years of experience in nonprofit management, development and fundraising, technology and information services, design, and online communications and constituent management.

He has been Executive Director of the Cambridge Peace Commission at the City of Cambridge, Mass. since April 2008. Brian started working as a progressive activist while at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and has been in Boston since 1987. He has been involved in a wide range of efforts, from electoral campaigns to Jobs with Justice to Technology for Social Change. Jobs with Justice to Technology for Social Change, to the American Civil Liberties Union. He is President of the Fair Economy Action Fund and is a member of the executive committee of the national board of directors of the American Friends Service Committee, is on the board of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, and is Affirmative Action and Outreach Officer of the Cambridge Ward 6 Democratic Committee. Brian served as co-chair of the national board of directors of Peace Action for five years until December 2007, is a founding member of the Massachusetts Civil Liberties Task Force, and the founder and lead organizer of the Northeast People of Color Network.

Brian has more than twenty years of experience working on issues of peace and justice, organizational development, and program planning and evaluation. Much of his work has focused on direct fundraising and organizing experience, and he has many years of expertise in developing and using technology applied to campaigns, organizing, and research. He has developed and managed budgets, ensuring that goals are reached and that potential problems are anticipated, recognized, and proactively addressed.

In his roles as a board member, Brian has focused on personnel, fiscal, and fundraising issues and work – and to developing systems and procedures for carrying out these organizations’ missions and work. He has developed, led, and implemented long-range strategic planning initiatives at a variety of organizations.

Work Experience:

Cambridge Peace Commission, City of Cambridge, Massachusetts: Cambridge, Mass.
Executive Director: 2008 – present
Officially the "Cambridge Commission on Nuclear Disarmament and Peace Education," the commission was established by the Cambridge City Council in 1982 to address the concerns of war and peace in the age of nuclear weapons. The Peace Commission promotes peace education by addressing issues of war and peace, promoting intercultural understanding and cooperation, supporting nonviolent conflict resolution and equality, and challenging local forms of discrimination that foster violence. The Commission also promotes ideas and programs that affirm the diversity of Cambridge and build community within the city.

The Executive Director reports directly to the City Manager and is responsible for all aspects of the work of the Cambridge Peace Commission. Working in collaboration with a volunteer City Commission, the Executive Director is responsible for:
• Providing leadership in policy and advocacy, strategy, planning and implementation of activities relating to peace and justice in Cambridge; representing the city in local, national and international forums.
• Initiating and collaborating with other City departments and community-based organizations to design and implement programs in the areas of: peace and multicultural education; anti-violence work in schools and neighborhoods; development of youth leadership; making links between global and national issues and local Cambridge communities; and promoting peace, justice and nonviolence by addressing the barriers created by race, ethnicity, class, culture, gender, sexual orientation, age, and life experience.
• Coordination and support for task forces, coalitions, trainings, education programs, and other citywide events related to the Peace Commission’s mission; writing reports, developing and monitoring the annual operating budget, and managing day-to-day operations and fiscal controls; managing the Commission’s communication and programming with other City departments and administrators; recruiting and working collaboratively with a diverse group of volunteer Peace Commissioners; recruiting, training, and supervising staff, consultants, and interns.

American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts: Boston, Mass.
Field Organizer and Public Education Coordinator: 2006 – 2008
Create and nurture “civil liberties task forces” across Massachusetts; identify leadership, carry out trainings, develop campaign materials and serve as liaison and resource person; develop community education programs, grassroots lobbying, and outreach efforts locally. Create new chapters and provide assistance to existing student chapters in high schools, colleges and law schools. Develop and implement a statewide public education program; plan, implement, and organize community education events throughout Massachusetts; implement and manage speakers bureau, including recruiting and training of speakers, marketing program, and preparing background materials for speakers. Work with other staff to update and maintain the organization’s website, listservs, databases, and other initiatives as needed; participate in fundraising efforts as part of education and organizing efforts.

Cambridge Consulting Services Group: Cambridge, Mass.
Principal/Owner: 2005 – present
Consulting with nonprofit organizations, with a focus on people of color and progressive organizations: event planning, fundraising and fiscal management, strategic planning and organizational development, communications and web design, and technology and information systems. Focus through March 2006 was as Program and Logistics Manager for The Power of Color — a national conference of progressive activists of color and activists from indigenous communities.

Northeast Action: Jamaica Plain, Mass.

Director, Technical Training and Support, 2001 – 2005
Evaluate needs, develop and implement technology plans for Northeast Action and its affiliates; develop technology budget, purchase, and install hardware and software; maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade software and hardware; assess needs, develop curricula, and conduct trainings for internal and external staff; develop and maintain databases, websites, networks, and other systems for Northeast Action and its affiliates; supervise Communications and Technology Assistant; develop, implement, manage, and evaluate ePower Project to use strategic technology planning, databases, GIS mapping, voter files, demographic and census data, and membership list enhancement to target and mobilize resources and campaign efforts throughout the region. In addition, work as lead organizer of the Northeast People of Color Network and its regional conferences; head internal Racial Justice Team.

Senior Organizer, Money and Politics Project, 1998 – 2001
Work to advance public understanding of the role money plays in politics and to support efforts toward fair election financing; work as lead organizer for metropolitan Boston on the 1998 Clean Election referendum campaign; work with state organizations in Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont to develop and implement outreach and public education efforts; support individual state campaigns on strategy, mobilization, research, media relations, and fundraising; facilitate communication among affiliates, activists, public officials, funders and media; plan and organize regional trainings and conferences for activists and reporters on public financing.

Responsible for all development work, raising annual budget of $961,000; manage and coordinate development staff; coordinate participation of Board and all staff in meeting fundraising objectives; develop and monitor fundraising plan, develop and meet budgets; plan and manage major gifts program, monthly pledge program, ongoing small donor programs, and other individual fundraising; manage all fundraising events; develop and manage direct mail acquisition campaign; edit reports and funding proposals; manage and maintain computer hardware and software, including development and implementation of fundraising database.

Horizons for Homeless Children, Dorchester, Mass.
Director of Development, 1995 – 1996
Responsible for annual fund of $320,000 and three-year capital campaign for $1.7 million; supervising development staff, including developing budgets, tracking fundraising plan, manage all fundraising events, develop and coordinate marketing and retail projects, write and design direct-mail appeals and other communications with individual and corporate donors; write and edit newsletter; responsible for public relations and outreach; solicit in-kind contributions; write grant proposals; expand donor base through targeted solicitations and acquisition; management and maintenance of computer hardware and software.
